Beating the Sunday blues- 10 tips for rest and relaxation

Sunday evening is still part of our  glorious weekend, and yet a lot of people, understandably, get the Sunday blues as the weekend winds down to a close. This post is dedicated to tips and tricks to avoid those feelings and squeeze as much of the weekend as we can and wake up Monday morning refreshed and ready to go. I truly hope these will help, and if you have other things that work for you, please leave them in the comments below.

1. Clean Up
First things first, it is my belief that a productive weekend sets up a smoother week ahead. If you've been too busy with fun or errands to get much done around the house, start your Sunday late afternoon/evening with a quick pick up session around the house. Put things where they belong, wash your sheets, (this is important in a later tip) and get the dishes taken care of!

2. Plan for Monday
Instead of taking the entire evening thinking about work, dreading it, or stressing about what you need to do tomorrow, make a list in your phone or on paper of all the things you will need to accomplish in the morning when you arrive. Preferably it will be in order to really keep things moving smoothly. You could train yourself to do this Fridays before you leave work, so you don't have to think about it at all over the weekend. Then- here's the important part- you make yourself stop thinking about work safe in the knowledge that you have a game plan in place for tomorrow.

I believe these first two steps are most important to complete in order to have a productive week ahead. The following steps are for a relaxing Sunday and you should choose among them according to what makes you feel happy and peaceful.

3. Pamper Yourself
The weekend isn't over yet, so don't act like it is! Take a bubble bath, do a face mask, give yourself a pedicure, or just slather on some thick moisturizer if you're a busy mom. All of these things help to ease any stress you might be feeling.

4. Get Cozy
Put on some cozy PJs, fuzzy socks, or whatever makes you most comfortable. It's still the weekend! You can live in comfy outfits!

5. Relaxation
This step can look different for everyone, depending on what you like to do to relax. I normally prefer reading books when I'm not getting my Master's in English and forced to read all the time for homework. Right I prefer to watch a few episodes of Netflix. I'm currently into Grey's Anatomy, Bones, and House!

6. Make a cup of tea
There is something really relaxing to me about using a tea kettle and then enjoying some hot tea. I use decaf at night to not interrupt my sleeping patterns. I didn't use to "like" tea, but now I really love Constant Comment and Earl Grey. Stir in 3/4 a tablespoon of sugar if you have a sweet tooth like me.

7. Gratitude and attitude
I journal, and on the weekends usually find time to write down all the fun things we did. Sometimes I write down what is stressing me out too, and it is very cathartic and helps me relieve that stress. If you are Christian like me, I think time in God's word is important to feeling at peace. Attitude is everything. I'm not saying I'm perfect- sometimes I have to force myself to think of that quote "I still remember when I prayed for the things I have now" and that includes my job. I do remember how fervently I prayed to find a job in the town that my then fiancĂ© lived. I did and now we're happily married and living in the house that our jobs let us buy. God is good, and so is my work.

8. Make the bed with fresh sheets
This step seems insignificant, but we all know how amazing it feels to slide into fresh smelling, crisp sheets. It will give you that much more joy on a Sunday night. If you have a magazine near the bed, and don't have allergies to scents, find a perfume sample you enjoy and open the tab and slide the sample across your pillow. It's a really luxurious and enjoyable detail! I've been doing it for years.

9. Light a candle
For some reason, there is a comfort factor for me with lighting candles. I love the light they give off, the flicker, the smell that fills the room, and the sense of luxury they bring.

10. Go to bed at a reasonable time
If you're married, going to bed early is a good time to snuggle up to your husband and be loved and/or talk about the last week. Cuddling is one of the best things for relaxing! Either way, single or married, getting into bed early is a good way to be ready for the week ahead and to relax. Sleep is the most relaxing thing there is! Haha! :)

I hope you enjoyed my ideas for a restful evening, even though the weekend is winding down. If you have other ideas I would love to hear them in the comments!

Thanks for reading,

  2. Sleeping is equally important for living a healthy and balanced life just like eating food and exercising.
